Why Won’t My Lower Denture Stay in Place?

In order for your dentures to work properly, they need to fit correctly. If they’re not securely attached or comfortable, it can be extremely difficult to use them effectively. If you are struggling to get a good fit on your lower jaw and having trouble using your dentures to eat and speak, here are a few reasons why this may be happening and what you can do to correct it.

Causes of a Bad Fit

In general, lower dentures have a harder time fitting properly to your jaw than upper ones do, because they don’t accommodate an easily obtained 360-degree hold at the prosthetic’s borders like top ones do. This is because bottom dentures need to allow space for your tongue and the up and down movement of the floor of your mouth when you speak and chew. They also need to resist being dislodged by your cheek side gums.

Here are a few reasons why your lower dentures may stop fitting properly:

  • Lack of seal from an inadequate border length
  • Resorption / deterioration of your jawbone
  • A warped denture base
  • Decreased amount or quality of saliva
  • Inability to use them properly

How to Fix Fit Issues

To determine what could be causing your dentures to fit improperly, you’ll need to visit your dentist for an evaluation. There are a few possible ways to adjust the fit that may be recommended, including:

  • A hard reline of the denture
  • Remaking the denture
  • Replacement with a completely different type of restoration, such as a dental implant

During your appointment, your dentist will exam your jaw and your denture and determine the cause of the poor fit. Once this is diagnosed, a treatment plan will be created to either repair or replace the denture.

Remember, your dentures need to fit securely in order to work properly. If yours are struggling to get a good hold to either jaw, this could subject you to undue pain and difficulty using them. Don’t let a bad fit cause unnecessary problems. Contact your dentist as soon as possible for a denture evaluation.
